I’m David, The Dorset Hutmaker, and I’ve been passionate about craftsmanship since my teens, studying design and carpentry, and focusing on traditional shepherds’ hut construction. I love shepherds’ huts; their design, their functionality, their history and their presence, and I’ve spent years learning how to build them using the best of traditional and modern techniques. Based in the heart of Hardy’s Wessex, where countryside traditions run deep, I find inspiration in the landscape that surrounds me. The softly sloping chalk downlands, still home to flocks of Dorset Down sheep historically watched over by hard-working shepherds from their huts. Respect for this rich history and heritage is the founding principle of my company and is ingrained in every hut I make. I build authentic Shepherd’s Huts, genuine representatives of this rich legacy that remain true to the historical design and build process while creating elegant functional spaces suited to modern needs.
